ใช้เวลาอยู่กลับครอบครัวอย่างเต็มอิ่มถึงหนึ่งเดือนเต็ม ๆ ตอนนี้ก็ได้เวลากลับค่ายฮาล์ฟบลัด ซึ่งคราวนี้ไม่ได้มีเพียงแค่ดีนกับแมคเคนซี แต่ยังมีสมาชิกใหม่อย่าง ‘เชมัส แคตต์’ เพิ่มมาด้วยอีกหนึ่งคน ตอนแรกคิดว่าจะจองตั๋วเพิ่มไม่ได้แล้วเสียอีก ยังดีที่พอมีที่ว่างให้พวกเขาแอดที่นั่งของเด็กเพิ่มไปอีกหนึ่ง
น่าประหลาดใจเหลือเกิน... ทั้งที่ช่วงนี้อยู่ในฤดูกาลแห่งการเดิน ระหว่างเทศกาลสำคัญช่วงปลายปี ที่ติดกันจนเป็นวันหยุดยาวแท้ ๆ แต่คุณฌอนพ่อของเชมัสยังจองตั๋วรถไฟมาได้ แถมยังได้อัพตั๋วเป็นตู้นอนสองขบวนเลยอีก หรือบางที... นี่อาจเป็นความอนุเคราะห์จากเทพบิดาหรือมารดาเด็กชายคนนี้ก็เป็นได้ ที่กล่าวแบบนั้นเป็นเพราะดีนยังไม่วางใจว่าเทพผู้ปกครองของเชมัสเป็นหญิงหรือชายจากกรณีของเจโรมที่เขาเคยรู้มา
นางอัลวาเรซขับรถมาส่งหนุ่ม ๆ ที่สถานีรถไฟซานอันโตนิโอ จะว่าตื่นเต้นก็คงได้ แม่ซื้อรถใหม่มาในช่วงที่ดีนไปเรียนที่นิวยอร์ก นี่จึงเป็นครั้งแรกที่ชายหนุ่มได้นั่งบนรถญี่ปุ่นสีน้ำทะเลคันนี้ (ไม่นับที่เขาช่วยเอารถของแม่เข้าที่จอดรถในวันแรกที่เจอกัน) หากปกติคงนั่งได้สะดวกสบายกว่ารถกระบะของลุงไมค์เยอะ ทว่าพวกเขามีสัมภาระเป็นกระเป๋าเดินทางใบโตถึงสามใบ และกระเป๋าใส่สัตว์เลี้ยงอีกหนึ่ง เรื่องกระเป๋าพอยัดใส่ไว้หลังรถได้สองใบ คนที่เบาะหลังต้องนั่งเบียดกับกระเป๋าอีกหนึ่ง ส่วนออมเล็ตดีนอุ้มไว้บนตัก ค่อยไปกางกระเป๋าใส่สุนัขตอนขึ้นรถไฟทีหลัง
“เดินทางปลอดภัยนะหนุ่ม ๆ ถึงค่ายแล้วอย่าลืมโทรหาแม่ล่ะ”
“ครับแม่ แม่ก็ขับรถกลับบ้านดี ๆ นะ”
ดีนเข้าไปสวมกอดมารดาผู้ให้กำเนิดด้วยความรัก เขาไม่อายเลยที่จะทำตัวเป็นเด็กอย่างการหอมแก้มแม่ซ้ายขวาขณะอยู่หน้าสถานีรถไฟ ใคร ๆ เขาก็ทำกันจะมัวอายทำไมล่ะ...
หลังบอกลากันเสร็จก็ถึงเวลาออกเดินทาง จัดการออมเล็ตให้อยู่ในกระเป๋าสัตว์เลี้ยงเรียบร้อย จากนั้นก็เข็นกระเป๋าขึ้นรถไฟแอมแทรกเส้นทางเท็กซัสอีเกิ้ล เชมัสดูไม่ได้ตื่นเต้นมากนักที่ต้องเดินทางไกลเพราะว่าเขานั่งเครื่องบินติดตามบิดามาจนชิน แต่การนั่งรถไฟข้ามรัฐแบบนี้อาจเป็นครั้งแรก
ห้องโดยสารเป็นห้องนอนแบบเดิมที่นอนได้สี่คน เพียงแต่คราวนี้มีเด็กเดินทางมาด้วย การละเล่นจ้ำจี้บนตู้โดยสารจึงเป็นเรื่องต้องห้ามโดยเด็ดขาด
“อยู่ในนี้อึดอัดไหมเชมัส ถ้านายอยากออกไปสูดอากาศล่ะก็ขึ้นไปที่ตู้ชมวิวได้นะ”
“ผมยังไงก็ได้ฮะ” เด็กชายผมดำเชื้อสายไอริชครึ่งเทพตอบกลับ
“แล้วนายล่ะแมคซี่ อยากขึ้นไปสูดอากาศข้างบนไหม?”

ไม่ผิดคาดสักเท่าไรกับคำตอบของแมคเคนซี
ในเมื่อคนนึงบอกว่ายังไงก็ได้ ส่วนอีกคนบอกว่าอยากอยู่ในตู้ส่วนตัว งั้นก็เอาเป็นพักผ่อนกันในนี้จนกว่าจะถึงเวลามื้ออาหาร แม้ว่าคนไฮเปอร์อย่างดีนอยากจะออกไปยืดเส้นยืดสายข้างบนเสียหน่อยก็เถอะ แต่ดูจากปริมาณผู้โดยสารจำนวนมากแล้วนั่ง ๆ นอน ๆ อยู่ในห้องนอนนี้ก็ได้
รถไฟค่อย ๆ เคลื่อนขบวนออกไปจากชานชาลา เด็กชายและสิงโตนีเมียนน้อยต่างแย่งกันเกาะกระจกชมวิว เชมัสมีท่าทีเกร็ง ๆ อยู่บ้างตอนที่ออมเล็ตแทรกเข้ามา แต่เหมือนเขาจะทำใจได้แล้วกับรูปลักษณ์ที่แท้จริงของมัน เพราะก่อนหน้านี้เด็กชายเห็นสิงโตเป็นสุนัขมาตลอดจนถึงวันเกิดของตัวเองที่ผ่านมาได้สัปดาห์เศษ ๆ ไม่เพียงเท่านั้น... ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างที่เลื่อนผ่านกรอบสายตาก็ดูเหมือนจะผิดปกติไปเสียหมด
และอาจเป็นโชคดีของเด็กชายที่เขาบังเอิญได้มาเจอกับรุ่นพี่ทั้งสองคน
“โอ๊ะ นอกหน้าต่างมีคุณวัวถือค้อนด้วยฮะ!”
เชมัสดูจะตื่นเต้นกับภาพที่เขาเห็นอยู่ไม่น้อยโดยหารู้ไม่ว่านั้นน่ะตัวอันตราย ที่นอกหน้าต่างรถไฟมีมิโนทอร์ตัวหนึ่งถือค้อนใหญ่โตทำท่าทางฉุนเฉียวอยู่ท่ามกลางทุ่งข้าวฟ่าง
“อ่าใช่ นั่นน่ะมิโนทอร์ เห็นเป็นคุณวัวเท่ ๆ แต่ถ้าเจอแล้วต้องรีบวิ่งหนีให้ไวเลยล่ะ ไม่งั้นโดนมันทุบแบนแต๊ดแต๋เป็นเนื้อบดในแฮมเบอร์เกอร์แน่ ๆ” ดีนเบ้ปากตอบ
“ดีนะที่เราอยู่บนรถไฟ คุณวัววิ่งตามไม่ทันแน่ ๆ” น้องน้อยหัวเราะขำ ๆ ดูท่าทางไม่หวั่นเกรงภัยที่มาไม่ถึงตัว ราวกับลืมไปแล้วว่าเคยถูกอสุรกายหกหัวระดับไฮดร้าวิ่งไล่ตาม “ไม่มีตัวไหนที่เชื่องเหมือนออมเล็ตเลยเหรอฮะ”
“อื้ม… จริง ๆ เผ่าพันธุ์ของออมเล็ตก็ดุร้ายนะ เพียงแต่ว่าเจ้านี่ถูกฉันเลี้ยงมาตั้งแต่เกิดมันก็เลยเชื่อง ถ้าเจอสิงโตนีเมียนที่ไหนก็ห้ามเข้าใกล้เหมือนกัน อสุรกายที่เชื่องมีไม่เยอะหรอก ระวังตัวเองไว้ก่อนปลอดภัยกว่า.. จะว่าไปสงสัยจังแฮะว่าเชมัสเป็นลูกของเทพองค์ไหน”
จากที่คลุกคลีกันมาเป็นเดือน ดีนพอรู้ข้อมูลของเด็กชายคร่าว ๆ เชมัสเป็นคนไอร์แลนด์ เดินทางกับพ่อบ่อย งานอดิเรกคือการว่ายน้ำแถมเคยเป็นตัวแทนลงแข่งว่ายน้ำเยาวชนรุ่นอายุต่ำกว่าสิบสองปี
‘คงไม่ใช่ว่า… ไม่หรอกมั้ง คงไม่จู่ ๆ ก็มีน้องชายงอกมาคนนึงหรอกนะ…’
“นายคิดว่าไงแมคซี่ มาเล่นเกมทายกันไหม?” ดีนหันไปถามคนรักหลังจากที่เขามัวแต่คุยกับเด็กมาพักนึง

“ไม่เสมอไปหรอก พ่อเจโรมยังเป็นผู้ชายเลย มีเทพกรีกไม่น้อยเลยนะที่เป็นไบเซ็กส์ชวลแล้วก็มีลูกกับเพศเดียวกันได้..”
พูดไปก็นึกขึ้นได้ว่ามีเด็กทำหน้างงอยู่ตรงนี้ ดีนจึงกระแอมแล้วตัดจบ ไม่ตั้งข้อสงสัยเรื่องระบบการสืบพันธุ์แบบพิศวงต่อ แม้จะได้คำตอบเรื่องนี้จากไนแอดสาวแห่งแม่น้ำซานอันโตนิโอมาแล้ว แต่มันก็เป็นเรื่องที่น่าเหลือเชื่อเกินกว่าจินตนาการอยู่ดี หนุ่มเท็กซัสผู้จากบ้านเกิดอีกครั้ง หันไปจับสีหน้าของแมคเคนซีที่ดูจะเคร่งเครียดเหมือนกับตอนที่เขาคิดว่าเชมัสอาจเป็นน้องชายของตัวเอง
“ดูนายทำหน้าสิ อย่างกับคิดว่าเชมัสจะเป็นน้องของนายว่างั้น” เขาหัวเราะในขณะที่นึกสนุก “งั้นฉันเดาว่าเชมัสเป็นบุตรของเทพีเฮคาทีแล้วกัน นายจะได้มีน้องเพิ่ม แต่ว่านายเนี่ยนะ.. องุ่นมันต้อง 'ไชน์ มัสคัท' ไม่ใช่เหรอ”
เชมัสได้แต่มองรุ่นพี่สองคนสลับกันไปกันมา พลางคิดว่าถ้าได้เป็นน้องชายของหนึ่งในสองคนนี้ก็คงดี ถึงจะเป็นลูกคนเดียวมาตลอดอายุสิบสองปีแต่ถ้ามีพี่ชายที่สนิทกันตั้งแต่แรกก็น่าจะไม่ลำบากหากห่างไกลบิดา
“ผมยังไงก็ได้ฮะ”
“ไม่ยังไงก็ได้สิ นั่นแม่หรืออาจจะพ่อแท้ ๆ ของนายก็ได้เลยนะ จะว่าไปนายมีเบาะแสอะไรเกี่ยวกับแม่ของตัวเองบ้างไหม?”
เด็กชายยังคงทำหน้างงกับท่อนหนึ่งของประโยค ‘นั่นแม่หรืออาจจะพ่อแท้ ๆ ของนายก็ได้เลยนะ’ แต่คำถามหลังทำให้เขาต้องเปลี่ยนจุดโฟกัสไป เชมัสจึงพยักหน้าหงึกหงัก
“พ่อบอกว่าแม่เป็นคนที่วิเศษที่สุดตั้งแต่ที่เคยเจอมาเลยฮะ เธอเป็นนางฟ้าบนสวรรค์ ถ้าอยากบอกเล่าเรื่องราวอะไรให้เขียนจดหมายแล้วเผาลงในเตาผิงแล้วคุณแม่จะรับรู้เองฮะ”
เพียงได้ฟังคำบอกเล่าของเด็กชายดีนก็เลิกคิ้วขึ้นข้างหนึ่งพลางครุ่นคิดตาม ดูเหมือนว่าคุณฌอนพ่อของเชมัสจะรู้เรื่องอะไรเยอะดีเหมือนกันแฮะ ถึงว่าตอนที่เขาไปบอกอีกฝ่ายตามตรงถึงไม่มีท่าทีตกใจมากมายไปกว่า ‘คุณรู้ได้ไงว่าลูกชายผมเป็นเดมิก็อด’ แถมยังบอกวิธีการสื่อสารถึงเทพเจ้าอีก ขนาดว่าตนยังเพิ่งมารู้เอาตอนอยู่ค่ายฮาล์ฟบลัดแล้วเลย การบอกความจริงกับลูกแบบนี้จะเข้าใจว่าคุณแม่เสียไปแล้วก็ได้ เป็นวิธีการที่แยบยล ต่อให้เล่าให้คนธรรมดาร้อยคนฟังก็ไม่มีทางคิดว่าแม่เด็กเป็นเทพเจ้าหรอก
“แต่ถ้าพูดว่าแม่คงไม่ใช่เทพผู้ชายสินะ พ่อฉันคงไม่ปลอมตัวไปหรอกเนอะ จินตนาการไม่ออกเลยว่าเทพโพไซดอนเวอร์ชั่นไม่มีหนวดจะหน้าตาเป็นยังไง”
ถึงเฟิร์สอิมเพรสชั่นตอนเจอกับภาพในอุดมคติในหัวจะโคตรต่าง มีแค่หนวดเคราบนใบหน้านี่แหล่ะที่เหมือนภาพมโนไม่มีผิด

“นายขี้บุลลี่นี่หว่า แต่รู้เลยว่าพอเชมัสเจอคุณดีจะถูกเรียกว่ายังไง”
ต่อยแขนคนรักเบา ๆ ไปทีนึงแล้วก็ต้องหัวเราะกับสิ่งที่คาดการณ์ว่าจะเกิดขึ้นตอนอยู่ค่าย เสียดายชะมัดที่วันเกิดของเชมัสเพิ่งผ่านไป หากถึงวันเกิดของเด็กชายอีกครั้ง ต้องมีป้าย ‘สุขสันต์วันเกิดไชน์มัสคัส’ พร้อมประดับเถาองุ่นติดอยู่เต็มแน่ ๆ
“ผมยังไงก็ได้ฮะ” เชมัสพูด
“ยังไงก็ได้อีกแล้วนะ นายติดปากคำพูดนี้จัง ถ้าไม่ชอบอะไรก็หัดปฏิเสธบ้าง”
ไม่รู้ว่าเป็นแค่คำติดปากเพราะขี้เกรงใจเหมือนพ่อ หรือว่าเด็กคนนี้ไม่คิดอะไรเลยจริง ๆ กันแน่ …ส่วนเรื่องเทพปลอมตัวเป็นหญิง
“ใครจะรู้ ลงทุนเป็นกวาง เป็นวัว เป็นฝนยังมีมาแล้วเลย โอ๊ย ไม่อยากจะคิดภาพ”

“ยังไงก็ได้.. หมายถึงทั้งสองอย่างเลยฮะ”
เด็กชายตอบกลับพร้อมกับยิ้มให้ อาจเพราะฌอนไม่เคยบอกว่าตัวตนที่แท้จริงของแม่เด็กคือใคร ก็เลยเป็นใครก็ได้ล่ะมั้ง ยังไงมีแม่เป็นเทพเจ้าก็พิเศษกว่าใคร ๆ อยู่แล้ว จากที่เข้าใจว่าแม่เสียไปแล้วแต่มารู้ทีหลังว่าแม่มีตัวตนเป็นอมตะอยู่บนโอลิมปัส ยังไงอย่างหลังก็ดีกว่าอยู่แล้ว
แต่จะว่าไป.. เด็กนี่รู้เรื่องตำนานเทพกรีกมากน้อยแค่ไหนกันนะ?
พอมีสมาชิกร่วมทางเพิ่มมาด้วยอีกหนึ่งก็เผลอสนทนาอย่างออกรสจนถึงเวลามื้ออาหารทั้งสองมื้อ ดีนได้กินเมนูที่อยากลองตอนขามาอย่างจุใจ เผื่อเอาไว้เพราะตอนที่ต่อรถจากชิคาโก้กลับนิวยอร์กจะไม่ได้กินหรูอยู่สบายแบบนี้อีกแล้ว
จนมาถึงเวลาเข้านอน เชมัสนอนหลับไปก่อนสมกับเป็นเด็กดีจริง ๆ เหลือแต่เพียงผู้ใหญ่สองคนที่ต้องแยกเตียงกันนอนในคืนนี้
“วันนี้ไม่ได้นอนด้วยกัน นายคงไม่เหงาจนนอนไม่หลับหรอกนะที่รัก”
นอนตะแคงเอียงข้างกระซิบถามแมคเคนซีที่นอนอยู่บนเตียงตรงกันข้ามที่มีระยะห่างกันเพียงแค่หนึ่งช่วงแขน

แรงสั่นสะเทือนเพียงเล็กน้อยของรถไฟปลุกเดมิก็อดสายเลือดโพไซดอนให้ตื่นขึ้นมา ชายหนุ่มหลับหูหลับตาคว้าแว่นที่หัวเตียงมาใส่ พยายามลืมตาตื่นขึ้นมามองไปรอบ ๆ ก็เห็นว่าทุกคนยังหลับสนิท
‘ปวดฉี่แฮะ…’
ไม่ต้องคิดให้มากความในเมื่อห้องน้ำส่วนตัวบนรถไฟได้อยู่ภายในห้อง ดีนสไลซ์ตัวลงมาจากเตียงก่อนจะเดินสะโหลสะเหลเข้าห้องน้ำ ทำธุระส่วนตัวรวมล้างมือไม่ถึงนาทีก็เสร็จ
“หงิง”
คงมีเพียงดีนและสิงห์น้อยที่ตื่นอยู่ เขาเห็นมันพยายามเอาตัวมุดผ้าห่มของสัตว์เหมือนกับว่าหวาดกลัวอะไรบางอย่าง และทิศทางที่มันมองออกไปคือหน้าต่างรถไฟ
‘จะว่าไป.. ถึงไหนแล้วนะ’
ดีนเดินไปที่หน้าต่างจากนั้นแง้มผ้าม่านออกดู สิ่งที่เขาเห็นเล่นเอาแทบช็อค มีปีศาจเงือกเกาะอยู่ที่หน้าต่าง มันพยายามทุบกระจกรถไฟอย่างเอาเป็นเอาตายจนกระจกบานหนาสั่นสะเทือน กลิ่นของเดมิก็อดสามคนมารวมตัวกันคล้ายกลิ่นของอาหารมื้อใหญ่ที่กินได้แบบบุฟเฟต์
“เหวอ!!”
ดีนร้องออกมาเสียงหลง แต่คนในห้องโดยสารเดียวกันกลับไม่มีใครขยับตัวตื่นลุกขึ้นมาดู ไม่รู้ด้วยทั้งคู่เป็นคนหลับลึก หรือสถานการณ์คนเจอผีก็มักจะเป็นแบบนี้… ปลุกใครไม่เคยตื่น นอกจากตกใจแล้วเขายังสงสัยกับเรื่องที่เกิดขึ้น ปีศาจเงือกขึ้นมาเกาะบนกระจกรถไฟได้ยังไง ตอนนี้รถไฟก็วิ่งด้วยความเร็วสูงไม่ใช่เหรอ!?
‘ไม่สิ.. แรงสั่นตอนที่ทำให้ตื่นเมื่อกี้คือ…’
ในตอนนี้ดีนไม่รู้สึกถึงเสียงของล้อรถบดกับราง หรือเพราะรถไฟหยุดวิ่งเจ้าพวกนี้จะตามมาทันกันนะ? หรือไม่ก็อีกอย่าง.. ปีศาจพวกนี้ก็ทำให้รถไฟต้องหยุดชะงักชั่วคราว จากนั้นก็ทุบกระจกลากเอาเดมิก็อดทั้งสามออกไปหม่ำ ๆ กู๊ดเกิร์ลต่อในน้ำ
แต่จะด้วยเหตุใดก็ช่าง ถ้ารถไฟยังออกวิ่งไม่ได้ล่ะก็แย่แน่ ไม่รู้เสียด้วยว่ากระจกจะทนทานต่อแรงกระแทกได้มากน้อยแค่ไหน บางทีเขาควรจะออกไปจัดการกับมันก่อนที่นางจะทุบกระจกแล้วแห่กันเข้ามาได้ โล่และหอกถูกหยิบจับอย่างรวดเร็วส่วนชุดเกราะช่างแม่ง ถึงจะไม่ใส่เกราะแต่แว่นตาว่ายน้ำค่าสายตาแปดร้อยคือสิ่งที่จำเป็น งานนี้ได้มีฉากต่อสู้ในน้ำแน่!
จากนั้นรีบหุนหันออกจากตู้นอน เท่าที่สังเกตดูภายในตู้โดยสารขบวนนอนเงียบกริบ มีเพียงเสียงเจ้าหน้าที่ที่ดูเหมือนจะวุ่นวายอยู่ด้านนอก พอจับใจความได้ว่าระบบรางมีปัญหาอะไรสักอย่างถึงทำให้รถไฟต้องชะลอและหยุดวิ่ง แต่ดีนจะมัวแต่หูผึ่งฟังเขาคุยกันไม่ได้ เพราะตอนนี้ชีวิตของแมคเคนซีและเชมัสกำลังตกอยู่ในอันตราย เผลอ ๆ จะเป็นตัวเขาเองด้วย
ดีนลักลอบออกจากขบวนรถไฟ จึงได้เห็นว่าตอนนี้ขบวนรถจอดอยู่เหนือน่านน้ำของทะเลสาบพอนชาร์เทรน ชายหนุ่มวิ่งไปตามรางอันคับแคบ ยังเห็นปีศาจเงือกเคาะกระจกหน้าต่างรถไฟอยู่เลย หนุ่มโพไซดอนรวบรวมน้ำไว้ที่ฝ่ามือก่อนจะยิงบอลน้ำไปสะกิดปีศาจเงือกพวกนั้น
“เฮ้!! ที่แกต้องสนใจคือตรงนี้พวก!!”
“อึก!”
ปีศาจเงือกสาวสะดุ้งเล็กน้อยก่อนคำรามใส่ ดูเหมือนว่าโปเกม่อนน้ำสู้กับโปเกม่อนน้ำจะตีกันไม่เข้าแฮะ บอลน้ำที่ดีนยิงออกไปถึงได้เบาหวิว มันส่งเสียงกรี๊ดใส่ด้วยคลื่นเสียงแหลมสูงจนหูอื้อ ทำเอาเดมิก็อดหนุ่มชะงักไปเล็กน้อย แต่เขาใช้กำลังเพียงอึดใจกระโดดลอยตัวขึ้นสูงเพื่อพุ่งหอกใส่มัน
ทว่า…
“เฮ้ย!!!”
ร่างหนึ่งพุ่งกระโจนจากน้ำขึ้นมาด้านข้างรวบตัวของชายหนุ่มลงไปยังผืนน้ำอันเงียบสงบ มันคือปีศาจเงือกอีกตัวที่พยายามกอดรัดเดมิก็อดลงไปกินใต้น้ำ เขาถูกพาดำดิ่งลึกลงไปอย่างรวดเร็ว จากแสงตะวันที่ส่องสว่างอยู่เหนือหัวบัดนี้เขาเห็นเพียงแค่แสงเลือนลาง หากเป็นคนอื่นที่ไม่มีพรหายใจใต้น้ำคงไม่อาจสู้ศึกนี้ไหวแน่ ๆ
ดีนมองไปที่เจ้าอสุรกาย ใช้กำลังดิ้นขัดขืนออกมาแต่มันกลับรัดเขาแน่นด้วยหางทั้งสองข้าง
‘เงือกสายพันธุ์ไหนวะเนี่ย ตอนที่เจอกับเจโรมไม่ได้หน้าตาแบบนี้นี่!’
ในเมื่อใช้กำลังกายไม่ได้คงต้องใช้กฎฟิสิกส์เสียหน่อย ถึงเป็นอสุรกายแต่คงไม่อาจต้านทานกฎของธรรมชาติได้หรอก
‘จะไหวไหมนะ… ตรีศูลน้อย’
ดีนควบคุมมวลน้ำที่อยู่รอบตัวให้เชื่อฟัง เสกตรีศูลน้อยให้ปรากฏอยู่เบื้องหน้า จากนั้นใช้พลังควบคุมเพิ่มแรงกดดันมหาศาลไปที่ร่างอสูรสาว ปีศาจเงือกเริ่มดินทุรนทุรายด้วยอาการหายใจไม่ออก จากมวลน้ำมหาศาลที่บีบอัดจนมันปล่อยอ้อมกอดอันเย็นเฉียบออก แต่ถ้าไม่กำจัดให้สิ้นคงก่อเรื่องอีก สายเลือดแห่งโพไซดอนจึงไม่ผ่อนพลังซ้ำยังใช้มันมากขึ้น มากขึ้น และมากขึ้น... จนกระทั่งสภาพสุดท้ายของปีศาจเงือกสองหางไม่ต่างจากบล็อบฟิช ร่างนั่นสลายไปเหลือแต่สินสงครามที่ลอยเท้งเต้งขึ้นมาเหนือผืนน้ำ
‘เหลืออีกตัว’
ดีนควบคุมน้ำส่งแรงดันที่ใต้ขา เขายังไม่อยากมีสภาพเหมือนอสุรกายที่ตายไปจึงเสกฟองน้ำล้อมตัวเองไว้ก่อนจะพุ่งทะยานขึ้นสูงเหนือน้ำในเวลารวดเร็ว
“เฮ้! ฉันกลับมาแล้ว!!”
ไม่ทันสิ้นเสียงหอกสัมฤทธิ์ก็พุ่งทะลุร่างของอสุรกายอีกตัว มันส่งเสียงกรี๊ดแหลมสูงอีกครั้งก่อนสิ้นชีพแล้วเหลือไว้เพียงสินสงคราม
“อุก.. เวียนหัวชะมัด”
ชายหนุ่มทรุดตัวโซเซ ใช้แขนค้ำยันตู้รถไฟเอาไว้ เมื่อครู่เขาใช้พลังมากเกินไป อาจเพราะจำนวนน้ำมหาศาลยากจะควบคุม หรือไม่ก็จากการเคลื่อนที่ขึ้นสู่ผืนน้ำอย่างรวดเร็วเกินไปจนร่างกายปรับสภาพตามไม่ไหว แม้ว่าเขาจะเสกฟองน้ำกันไว้อีกหนึ่งชั้นแล้วก็ตามที แต่จะปล่อยให้ตัวเองหมดสติตอนนี้ไม่ได้ เขาได้ยินเสียงการซ่อมแซมรางว่าเสร็จเรียบร้อยแล้ว ได้เวลาที่ต้องรีบกลับไป ดีนใช้พลังทำให้ตัวแห้งก่อนจะปีนขึ้นตู้รถไฟทางประตูเก่า พยายามเดินสะโหลสะเหลกลับไปทางห้องพักจากนั้นทรุดตัวลงตรงเบาะนอนของออมเล็ต
“อ๊าววว” แมวยักษ์ตัวน้อยเข้ามาเลียใบหน้า ส่วนดวงตาของดีนค่อย ๆ ปิดปรือ เขาตบสีข้างของมันบอกว่าตัวเองไม่เป็นไร ก่อนจะสลบไปทั้งอย่างนั้น

หนึ่งเดือนผ่านไปไวเหมือนโกหก ในที่สุดก็ถึงเวลาต้องบอกลาครอบครัวอันแสนอบอุ่นของดีนที่ซานอันโตนิโอและเดินทางกลับไปยังค่ายฮาล์ฟบลัดกันเสียที ซึ่งรอบนี้มีเดมิก็อดน้อยนามว่า ‘เชมัส แคตต์’ ร่วมเดินทางไปกับพวกเขาด้วย ซึ่งแมคเคนซีเองรู้เพียงแค่ว่าคนรักของเขารับหน้าที่เป็นพี่เลี้ยงเด็กและคอยสอนการบ้านให้เซมัสช่วงที่พวกเขาอยู่ซานอันโตนิโอ แต่เรื่องที่ว่าดีนรู้ได้อย่างไรว่าเด็กชายคือเดมิก็อดนั้นคงต้องให้เจ้าตัวเล่าให้ฟังในภายหลัง
แมคเคนซียิ้มเล็กน้อยมองดีนกอดลาผู้เป็นแม่ราวกับเด็กที่กำลังถูกส่งไปเข้าค่าย (ซึ่งพวกเขาก็กำลังจะกลับค่ายจริง ๆ นั่นล่ะ) ซึ่งคุณมาเรียนน่าก็แบ่งปันความอบอุ่นนั้นมาให้เขาและเชมัสด้วย หนุ่มเชื้อสายอังกฤษกอดคุณมาเรียนน่าผู้ซึ่งเปรียบเสมือนแม่อีกคนก่อนจะคลายกอด เมื่อบอกลากันเรียบร้อยแล้วพวกเขาก็พากันขึ้นรถไฟขบวนที่จะเดินทางไปยังชิคาโก

สุดท้ายพวกเขาก็ตกลงกันที่ว่าจะนั่งอยู่ในตู้นอนส่วนตัวจนถึงเวลามื้ออาหาร แมคเคนซีจึงนั่งมองทิวทัศน์นอกหน้าต่างเงียบ ๆ จนกระทั่งเชมัสร้องขึ้นมาว่าเห็น ‘วัวถือค้อน’ เขาจึงมองตามไป ให้ตายสิ นั่นมันอสุรกายไม่ใช่เหรอ ด้วยความเร็วของรถไฟมันคงไม่ทันสังเกตเห็นพวกเขา จากนั้นแมคเคนซีก็ฟังดีนกับเชมัสคุยกัน ซึ่งอันที่จริงแล้วเขาไม่ใช่คนที่ถูกโรคกับเด็กสักเท่าไหร่ แต่เพราะการมาอยู่ค่ายฮาล์ฟบลัดที่ประชากรส่วนใหญ่เป็นเด็กเป็นเวลาหลายเดือน จึงทำให้แมคเคนซีคิดว่าตนเองก็พออยู่ร่วมกับเด็ก ๆ ได้ดีขึ้นกว่าแต่ก่อนในระดับนึง…ล่ะมั้ง
“หืม…ให้ทายว่าเชมัสเป็นลูกใครน่ะเหรอ”
อยู่ ๆ ก็ถูกชักชวนให้เข้าร่วมวงสนทนาด้วย แมคเคนซีที่กำลังนั่งด้วยท่าสบาย ๆ จึงขยับตัวนั่งดี ๆ ดวงตาสีฮาเซลมองไปทางดีนก่อนจะย้ายไปยังเด็กชายชาวไอรีชที่กำลังมองหน้าเค้าด้วยใบหน้าไร้เดียงสา
“อืม…ถ้าพ่อเป็นมนุษย์ แม่ของเชมัสก็ต้องเป็นเทพีสักองค์น่ะสิ…”
ฉับพลัน ดวงหน้าของหญิงคนหนึ่งก็ปรากฏขึ้นในความคิด ผู้ให้กำเนิดที่เขาเจอในภวังค์ที่ร้านเวทมนตร์ในซานอันโตนิโอ ‘เทพีเฮคาที’
‘บ้าน่า…’
แมคเคนซีส่ายหน้าไปมาไล่ความคิดในหัว ไม่ใช่ว่าไม่ยอมรับหากตนเองจะมีน้องชายร่วมมารดาเพิ่มอีกคน แต่หากเชมัสเป็นน้องชายของตนจริง ๆ แม่ของเขาน่าจะบอกอะไรสักอย่างหรือฝากฝังเชมัสไว้กับเขาเมื่อยามพบกัน
“ฉันว่า…เชมัสเป็นลูกของเทพีดีมิเทอร์ เพราะชื่อคล้ายพันธุ์องุ่น เทพีคงอยากตั้งชื่อลูกให้เกี่ยวโยงกับพวกพืชพรรณอะไรแบบนี้…”
ไม่รู้ว่านี่ถือเป็นการบูลลี่ชื่อหรือเปล่า แต่พอพูดชื่อและนามสกุลของเด็กชายติดกันทีไรแมคเคนซีก็อดนึกถึงองุ่นไม่ได้ทุกที นี่น่าจะเป็นการคิดวิเคราะห์ที่ตื้นเขินที่สุดครั้งหนึ่งของเขาเลยก็เป็นได้

“อะไรก็เป็นไปได้ทั้งนั้นแหละสำหรับที่นี่ ถ้าเป็นลูกแม่ฉันก็ดีเหมือนกัน จูลี่จะได้มีเพื่อนด้วย ช่วงนี้ยิ่งดูเหงา ๆ อยู่”
ใช่…ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องเทพกรีกมีลูกกับเพศเดียวกันได้ หรือแม้แต่เขาจะมีน้องชายเพิ่มมาอีกคนก็ตาม นึกถึงน้องชายคนเล็กในบ้านแล้วก็เป็นห่วงขึ้นมา ส่วนทางชาร์ล็อตที่ออกไปทำภารกิจแล้วยังไม่กลับค่ายมาจนถึงตอนนี้ก็น่าเป็นห่วงไม่แพ้กัน แม้บางทีจูลี่จะเล่าให้ฟังว่าเธอใช้ช่องทางสัญญาณของไอริสติดต่อมาเป็นครั้งคราวก็ตามที
“เห็นไหม มันก็คล้ายจริง ๆ องุ่นไชน์ มัสคัส ส่วนนี่เชมัส แคตต์”
ว่าแล้วก็ออกเสียงเปรียบเทียบให้ฟังซะเลย จากนั้นก็กลับมาสนใจเรื่องผู้ปกครองของเด็กชายต่อ เมื่อได้ฟังที่เชมัสเล่าก็ถึงกับมุ่นคิ้วอีกครั้ง ‘แม่เป็นคนที่วิเศษที่สุด’ ประโยคนี้คล้ายกับที่พ่อเล่าเรื่องแม่ของเขาให้ฟังไม่ผิดเพี้ยน จะไม่เหมือนก็แค่พ่อของเขาไม่เคยบอกว่าแม่เป็น ‘นางฟ้า’ ก็เท่านั้น ซึ่งแมคเคนซีก็คิดว่าพ่อทำถูกแล้วที่ไม่พูดคำนี้ออกมา งั้นเรื่องที่ว่าเชมัสเป็นน้องชายเขาน่าจะตัดออกไปได้เลย
“ถ้าถึงขั้นต้องปลอมตัวเป็นผู้หญิง พ่อนายคงชอบเขามากเลยล่ะ”
นึกแล้วก็ยิ้มฝืด ก็นะ…ขนาดเรื่องเล่าในตำนานที่เขาเคยอ่านมา พวกเทพก็แปลงกายเป็นนั่นนี่มาเกี้ยวพาราสีมนุษย์เยอะแยะไป

“นายก็พูดไป บอกแล้วว่าฉันแค่เทียบเสียงให้ฟังเฉย ๆ”
จะหัวเราะผสมโรงไปด้วยเดี๋ยวก็จะกลายเป็นการบูลลี่ชื่อเด็กจริง ๆ แต่อยู่ ๆ คำตอบของเชมัสที่พูดขึ้นมาก็ทำเอาแมคเคนซีงงไปเล็กน้อย
“ยังไงก็ได้ของนายนี่…หมายถึงจะเป็นลูกเทพองค์ไหนก็ได้ หรือจะให้เรียกนายว่าเชมัสหรือไชน์มัสคัสก็ได้ล่ะ”
คำถามฟังดูน่าโดนต่อยซ้ำแต่เขาก็สงสัยกับความ ‘ยังไงก็ได้’ ของเชมัสจริง ๆ
“คิดมากตอนนี้ไปก็เท่านั้น เราแค่ทายกันเล่น ๆ เองนี่ใช่ไหม เดี๋ยวถึงค่ายแล้วก็รู้เอง”
ว่าแล้วก็เอนหลังพิงผนังตู้นอนต่อ เจ้าไข่เหลืองที่นั่งเอียงคอฟังคนนั้นทีคนนี้ทีก็อ้าปากหาวเดินไปนอนตรงประจำตัวเอง

เมื่อได้ฟังคำตอบแมคเคนซีก็ยักไหล่เล็กน้อย บางทีนี่อาจไม่ใช่คำพูดติดปาก แต่เป็นความรู้สึกจริง ๆ ของเด็กชายก็เป็นได้ ซึ่งเขาก็หวังว่าเชมัสจะไม่ตอบว่า ‘ยังไงก็ได้ฮะ’ ไปเสียทุกเรื่อง
แม้จะเป็นช่วงเวลาที่ไม่มีพระจันทร์ขึ้นตลอด 24 ชั่วโมง แต่วันนึงก็ผ่านไปเร็วเสมอ และตอนนี้ก็ถึงเวลานอนของพวกเขาแล้ว
“ไม่น่า ห่างกันแค่นี้เอง ฉันนอนมองหน้านายเดี๋ยวก็หลับแล้ว”
ดีที่เชมัสหลับไปแล้ว ไม่งั้นคงได้กลิ่นตุ ๆ หรือเกิดอาการ ‘เหม็นความรัก’ แน่ ๆ พรุ่งนี้พวกเขายังต้องโดยสารรถไฟขบวนนี้ต่อ หลังจากที่นอนมองหน้าคนรักพลางคิดอะไรไปเรื่อยเปื่อย ไม่นานนักแมคเคนซีก็หลับไปภายใต้แสงอาทิตย์ยามกลางคืน
